The Liebster Award

‘Tis the season for F. Scott Fitzgerald quotes and all things pumpkin spice.¬†We spent the first day of fall at Sequoyah Park, a serene green space that’s perfect for early morning runs (and photo shoots, of course).

Our post looks a little different this week, because (drum roll please…) the¬†talented home cooking blogger Hillary of 918 nominated us for the Liebster Award! We are beyond flattered–thank¬†you so much, Hillary!

What is the Liebster Award?

The Newbie Blogging Liebster Award is an award given to new bloggers, usually for those who have less than 200 followers, by other bloggers as a way to support each other in our journey to growing and building our blogs.

What are the rules?

  • Post your award to your blog.
  • Answer the questions you were given by the person who nominated you.
  • Nominate a small group of other new bloggers you‚Äôve discovered.
  • Create 10 new questions for the nominees.
  • Thank the blogger who nominated you and link their blog.

Hillary’s questions with¬†M+R’s responses:

01. When did you start your blog?

M+R: We published our very first post on March 5, 2015.

02. What’s the one big thing you want your readers to know?

M: Our blog gives readers a taste of our personalities and creative sides while living in a smaller city.

R:¬†It makes my day when someone tells me they enjoy reading our posts! It’s so nice to receive¬†feedback and music¬†suggestions from readers.

03. What is your main purpose/goal of blogging?

M:¬†As we are fashion and music lovers, it’s a fantastic outlet for us to express these things that we love so much to the public eye. I’m also able to explore and challenge myself with the latest fashion trends.

R: We public relations majors are always striving¬†to improve our writing skills. I started blogging because it’s a fun,¬†creative outlet¬†to express myself¬†through my writing and photography.

04. Where is your favorite place in the world?

M:¬†My favorite place in the world would be Cinque Terre, Italy! I love it because it’s a collection of vibrant and beautiful towns by the ocean.

R:¬†It’s a tie between Chicago and San Francisco. Both cities are home to¬†the¬†dreamiest, most diverse¬†culture,¬†food, architecture, art and music scenes.

05. If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?

M: I would love to have dinner with either Natalie Portman or Win Butler.

R: Mark Zuckerberg.

06.¬†What is your 3-sentence ‚Äúpitch‚ÄĚ of what your blog is about?

M+R: Mimi + Roxanne is a music and fashion photography blog based in Knoxville, Tennessee. Each week, we highlight artists of varying genres whose work we admire. We hope that M+R is a source for both sartorial and musical inspiration.

07. Do you have a favorite childhood memory?

M:¬†My favorite childhood memory would be when I got to go to the animal shelter with my dad and play with all the dogs, as I wasn’t allowed to have a dog growing up. This was the highlight of my childhood years.

R: This is kind of silly, but I vividly remember having frequent dance parties with my entire family to the song “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba.¬†The 90’s were awesome.

08. Can you listen to other things while you blog, or does it need to be quiet?

R:¬†I listen¬†to our¬†featured artist’s album for some inspiration before I start writing each week, but generally prefer to blog in silence.

09. Do you know your average word count on your posts?

M+R: Most of our posts have between 150 and 250 words. Short and sweet.

10.¬†What‚Äôs your favorite color? ūüôā

M:¬†I don’t really have a favorite color, but¬†I¬†would say all neutrals and blues.

R: Yellow. All day.

Summer may feel like a distant memory, but Vince Staples’ debut double LP¬†Summertime ’06¬†remains one of the best rap albums of the year.

XXL¬†included the California native¬†in its 2015 Freshman Class, which is comprised¬†of the top 10 up-and-coming rappers who are “defining the new wave of hip-hop,” and Rolling Stone¬†named him “the most exciting man in rap.” Did we mention he’s only 22?

The Sprite enthusiast and Taylor Swift fan first gained a following as an associate of the rap collective Odd Future.

Recently, Staples¬†announced that he will join A$AP Rocky and Tyler, The Creator’s North American tour as a “special guest” along with Danny Brown. Two words: squad goals.

Wild Child

Where in the world is Mimi Campbell?

This week she and The Black Lillies called Dolores, Colorado home. They¬†stayed with a gracious host who casually lived¬†a stone’s throw from Mesa Verde National Park, and Black Lillies front man Cruz Contreras was there to snap a few¬†photos. Thanks, Cruz!

Brittany Howard of the soulful rock quartet¬†Alabama Shakes dropped a surprise album last week under the epic pseudonym Thunderbitch. Alongside five Nashville-based bandmates,¬†Howard lives up to the name of her sassy alter ego with¬†fiery tracks including, “Leather Jacket” and “Wild Child.”

Reminder: a mere five months ago Alabama Shakes released their sophomore LP¬†Sound &¬†Color, which features¬†12 songs written and composed by Howard and Blake Mills. It’s¬†easily one of our favorite¬†2015 albums.

This week’s spotlight artist is straight outta Mosfellsb√¶r, Iceland. Similar to Sigur R√≥s and Bj√∂rk,¬†√ďlafur Arnalds adds to the impressive list of talented multi-instrumentalists hailing from the peaceful island nation.

The BAFTA award-winning composer and producer is known for his ambient neo-classical music, but Arnalds actually started as a drummer for multiple metal bands. Rock on.

Earlier this year, Arnalds teamed up with classical pianist Alice Sara Ott to create The Chopin Project,¬†a¬†tribute¬†to Fr√©d√©ric Chopin and Arnalds’ beloved late grandmother who¬†was an avid listener of the Polish composer.

The insanely creative artist seems to be constantly collaborating: Arnalds worked with Berlin-based musician Nils Frahm this summer to film and record an improvised performance titled Trance Frendz. The duo also announced their upcoming LP Loon, out later this month.

Melt your stress away with the song “Verses” by √ďlafur Arnalds and Alice Sara Ott.

For One To Love

Carl Cowan Park series: part deux.

This lightweight maxi dress is a beautiful, easy look for warm days. We loved how playful the tie dye print looked as the breeze rolled in from the nearby river.

She may¬†be young, but 25-year-old jazz vocalist¬†C√©cile McLorin Salvant has¬†one¬†powerful voice. Last year Salvant’s¬†2013 album WomanChild was nominated for a Grammy, and¬†Nate Chinen of The New York Times¬†recently called¬†her “the finest jazz singer to emerge in the last decade.”

Born to a French mother and Haitian father, she¬†sings in English, French and Spanish. Her¬†cure for boredom and stress? The singer¬†is an avid painter–she even created the artwork for her new album For One To Love.

Visit Salvant’s¬†Tumblr¬†to see more of her work.

Salvant discusses her songs, paintings and inspirations in the delightful video below.

Preview her upcoming album¬†For One To Love, out¬†September 4 via Mack Avenue,¬†with the song “Look at Me.”

Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally have done it again. Together the Baltimore-bred duo form Beach House, a band with a deliciously hypnotic sound and brand new album.

Officially rolling out on August 28 via Sub Pop Records, Beach House’s¬†Depression Cherry¬†is streaming for a limited time via NPR’s First Listen.

Beach House’s dream pop record, staying true to their signature sound,¬†arrives just in time to be our melancholy soundtrack for fall–a season of new beginnings and¬†accompanying anxieties.

Similar to summertime, Mac DeMarco released his¬†short and sweet mini-album¬†Another One¬†last month. DeMarco explained to¬†NPR, “It’s all love songs this time.”

It took the quirky Canadian singer-songwriter just a little over two weeks to write and record the eight beachy love tracks.

An added bonus?¬†The guy actually gives out his Brooklyn address and invites listeners¬†to join him for a cup of coffee¬†at the end of¬†“My House on the Water,” the mini-album’s final song.

According to his interview with Stereogum, at least 20 super-fans have already taken him up on the offer.

Check out the ultimate feel-good pop track “I’ve Been Waiting For Her” on Spotify. While you’re there, listen to his fantastic 2014 LP Salad Days.
